Artist Statement

What makes a photograph  special? I consider that all things tell a story, and that all things have emotion. I accept that through the means of art, it is made possible to identify and capture these stories and emotions. Photography is much more than just the process of taking a photo. It is the recording and preservation of important moments; beyond that, it is a form of communication. Although photography can be both motionless and lively, it possesses the ability to, what we would call, freeze time. With only a little context, photographs are able to narrate our lives with little to no words.

As a current digital creator and college student, with a strong focus in photography,  I am constantly welcoming the different ways that the medium of photography can express my interpretation of the world around me. These interpretations mainly consist of the small details that are overlooked in everyday life. But how does one depict the underlying narratives and sentiments in these, oftentimes, discounted details? Digital art tools and technology allow me to take the mundane features in everyday life and bring out their stories and emotions by first capturing them, and then manipulating them.

However, these tools are obsolete without a creative process. To think creatively means to think critically. This is where my passion for photography and writing (journalism) collide. Do the research and tell the story. In my experience as a creative and as a writer, these elements go hand in hand.

I am specifically interested in creating works that expose the beauty in the prosaic moments and characteristics found within customary life. My goal is not only for viewers to understand my interpretation of the world through my lens, but to also provide perspective. I understand art as a creative means to communicate, regardless of the method/medium.

My Senior Project

What do you visualize when you hear the words "mental health"? What is mental health to you? For my senior project I want to explore how mental health and its emotional, psychological, and social aspects can be interpreted through the medium of photography and digital manipulation. This project will feature surreal aspects that will further visually interpret mental health and how it can be understood. I chose specific areas within mental health to explore and give perspective. Each visual will be given context and will stand alone when presented.

Artist Bio

Tyrique Scott, a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native who grew up in the state of Florida, is a current

photographer and digital artist.

Having established an early interest in writing and visual art while growing up in the south, these interests quickly turned into passions.

Tyrique developed a love for photography and reinforced his interest in writing by putting them together and pursuing a photojournalism and storytelling photography style. With a focus in Photo and Video, he took a strong liking to portraits and became deeply fascinated with the way faces can tell stories and portray emotion.

His goal is for his work to allow others to see the stories and emotions his lens can bring out in everyday people, or in the overlooked details in everyday life.

To achieve this, Tyrique looks to accept challenges and responsibilities that will increase his goal setting, not only through his work, but real-world situations
